Childhood Deafness and Hearing Loss
The Childhood Deafness and Hearing Loss PSP was launched in 2023 and will work with patients, their caregivers and healthcare/education professionals to identify and prioritise the unanswered questions that they agree are the most important for research to address.
Childhood Deafness and Hearing Loss Priority Setting Partnership
Permanent childhood hearing loss is identified in around 1.7 in 1000 children in the UK at birth. The number of children ultimately identified with hearing loss increases due to progressive and acquired hearing loss, and mild hearing losses not picked up by newborn screening.
Hearing loss can have negative impacts on a child’s language, social development, and educational outcomes. Effective early intervention can significantly help to mitigate these negative impacts.
The more we understand about childhood hearing loss the better we can ensure that children with hearing loss have the same opportunities in life as their peers with normal hearing.
